In 1986 we rented a camper and took our three kids on an extended vacation in the west. We camped in Bear Lake, the Tetons, Yellowstone, with our furthest point being Billings, Montana. In Billings, we had stopped at a local museum because we always included a learning experience in our travels. All that Don and I could remember from this museum was that it had a two headed stuffed calf! We had no name of the museum, just a picture of the camper parked in front and one photo from inside.
So yesterday, we made a trip into Billings just to see if we could find the museum. Ah, shades of deja vu! It's the Yellowstone County Museum, which is oddly situated right outside the long term parking of Billings Airport now. The good news is that we didn't have to pay to park and the museum was free.
Just so you believe me, here are pics of us in 1986, and one that I took of Don by the same wagon that sits in the basement:
Even the horse themed wallpaper by the ceiling is still the same.
And here is a picture of the two headed calf that was born in 1949 and only lived for a day and a half. The bodies merged in the middle, leaving it with two back legs and four front ones. Because a two headed calf is so rare, the family had it stuffed and brought it to Montana in the 1950's. It was donated to the museum in 1970.
Kinda makes you wonder why sometimes oddities like this calf stick in your mind for decades, yet you can't remember what you were doing a week ago. At least, that is how our old minds work. I took lots of pictures this time, since I'm sure we won't be coming back in 2044!
Very interesting...thanks for sharing!
