Steps to Finding a Finnish Windmill

How do you find an old Finnish windmill in the middle to nowhere?  Here are the steps:
  • Travel 2000 miles to visit friends now living in the Upper Peninsula.
  • Friend travels 30 miles north for a doctor appointment.
  • The good friend finds the current Lake Superior Magazine in the office & gets permission to take it.
  • Good friend gives us the magazine.
  • I read the magazine while traveling to Duluth and find there is a whole page article devoted to this historic windmill, somewhere close to where we are staying.
  • Do Internet research.  Can't find the little "township" on Google or Yahoo.  Almost give up on finding this.
  • Go ask campground host.
  • Host advises it is just miles east of the campground.
  • Turn left out of the campground on to Wisconsin 13, drive 3 miles and voila!

  • A bit of history of the historic windmill:
Jacob Tapola Davidson immigrated from Finland and settled near the tiny town of Lakeside.  He built this 8 sided windmill based on a coffeepot that he owned.  It's made of local materials: yellow birch for the wooden gears, tamarack, and stones from the Amnicon Falls area.  Construction was started in 1900 and completed 4 years later.  This is the original location it was built on and has never been moved.  It was owned by the Davidson family until 2001 when it was donated to the Old-Brule Heritage Society.

See how easy it was!!!
